Every time we hear the word “romantic comedies,” our mood brightens up. And during the lockdown phase, while we were looking for good-old entertainment, we bumped across some of the best romantic comedies from the past few years. Revisiting them was surely nostalgia! Not wanting to be selfish, we decided to enlist the 8 best romantic comedies in the last 5 years. Here’s to this blast from the past!
Oh! And by the way, we decided to take our list up a notch- so we’re going to make this inclusive list of Bollywood, Hollywood, and some other movies from other parts of the world. All you need is subtitles, and you are good to go. You might find some of these underrated, but give it a try on our suggestion.
Best Romantic Comedies in the Last 5 Years
1. Crazy Rich Asians, 2017
Low-key and lesser-known, Crazy Rich Asians is surely worthy of a place on our list of best romantic comedy movies. Starring brilliant artists like Constance Wu and Henry Golding, the movie intrigues a relaxed mind. Love and money have never been a couple, but a lot happens when you’re a couple with someone who is filthy rich. Similar is the story of Rachel Chu and Nicholas “Nick” Young. A simple-looking professor, Rachel, falls in love with the very handsome, and rich, of course, Nick.
The challenge isn’t adjusting to the lavishness. It is to adjust to the idea that people think of you as a gold digger. The movie defines Rachel’s journey of proving people’s belief’s wrong, and also proving her worth of becoming part of a multi-millionaire household. But then, what are you going to do when it comes to your self-esteem? Do what Rachel and Nick did! The stellar performances complement the movie, making it one of the best romantic comedies of our times. Catch the flick to revel in the story of these crazy lovers.
2. Ki and Ka
Bollywood is a powerhouse of romance; that is no news. But over the last few years, it has given some blockbuster romantic comedy movies. Just when we thought of that, popped into our head Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor starter Ki and Ka. Gender bias and gender-defined roles are debates people are having for a long. In the normal world, it is difficult to find like-minded people. In their unconventional marriage too, there is a place for the same old ego clashes, jealousies, and relationship issues.
But there’s a twist! Kia is a career-oriented modern woman who doesn’t want to settle with household chores. Kabir, on the other hand, is a chilled-out contemporary guy free from societal foundations. He doesn’t mind being a stay-at-home husband, managing the chores an Indian wife is expected to perform. Fighting the mindsets of people around, fighting to find peace in their new-age wedding and fighting to be and not to be with one another is everything that Ki and Ka comprise. The songs indeed add to the glamor!
3. Isn’t It Romantic
With an ensemble cast like that of Isn’t It Romantic, it is beyond impossible to give this one a miss. What also stands out is the brilliance with which the director plots the movie. The scenes don’t revolve around simplistic or crazy fights of a couple falling in and out of love. Rebel Wilson, a plus-size woman plays the lead in the movie, breaking the taboo of fit and skinny women deserving romantic screen spaces! Plus, who wouldn’t; want to see a movie with Chris Hemsworth in it?
Natalia, a young architect, is far from love, and its types. But one incident forces her into romance, and life changes from thereon. Released just in 2019, the movie has already made its way up on the list of the best romantic comedies in the last 5 years. Isn’t it Romantic also stars the lovely & versatile Priyanka Chopra alongside Adam Devine.
4. Dum Laga Ke Haisha
If we have It isn’t romantic on the list, then Dum Laga Ke Haisha automatically reserves a spot. Somewhat similar when it comes to the female lead, everything else screams love gobbled by comedy. The movie that released in 2015, took the Indian audience by a wave of surprise. For the first time, the Bollywood entertainment industry made way for an overweight woman to play the lead to find love in a good-looking man. Like that isn’t really possible! But, of course, the trend is to define good looks with fitter bodies, and so this change received an applauding welcome.
It is for this reason that this fits in the list of our best romantic comedies. Not just is the story refreshing but also teaches people to look at what is on the inside. The outside withers off anyway! This pair of virtuoso actors Ayushman Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar was an instant click. When a simple guy dreaming of a filmy heroine has to marry a career-oriented, but, overweight woman in an arranged marriage setting, a lot can go wrong! And it does! The situational comedy, the laughter-riot dialogues, and the wholesome sentiments make this movie worth a watch.
5. Love, Simon
The entertainment industry has one of the widest scopes for innovating concepts in a manner that touches the heart. Love, Simon is one among them. It subtly, yet aptly portrays the lives of the LGBT community who have to closet themselves in the fear of judgment and bullies. When Simon (Nick Robinson) finds the one guy online he is finally able to connect with, he begins to feel like himself. He chats with someone with a pseudo name “Blue” and is on a quest to find his love interest.
Everything seems fine until his friend Martin finds their emails, and begins to blackmail Simon. They have an agreement; Martin will keep his identity disclosed if Simon helped him connect with the girl he loves. With quite some high-points, a fab pack of friends, and, of course, love, the movie determinedly secures a number of the best romantic comedies in the last 5 years. After all, everyone deserves a great love story (tagline).
6. The Big Sick
The movie that released in 2017 with hardly any expectations took the online world by storm. An uber driver, Kumail, wants to make a mark as a stand-up comedian. In the process, he ends up falling in love with a woman, Emily who develops an illness. But by the time that happens she has already broken up with him after learning his parents had already chosen a girl for his alliance through an arranged marriage system. Despite the distance that she brought between them, Kumail fights Emily’s parents, and Emily herself to stay by her bedside.
Apart from romance and comedy, the depth of emotions adds a lot to the plot The Big Sick. Turns out, the story is inspired by true events, and so it makes it very relatable for the common man. Hands down, it is surely one of the best go-to romantic comedy movies.
7. Badrinath ki Dulhaniya
Record-breaking songs, a hot loved couple, a no-sweat story, and beer & skittles collaboratively make for the rom-com, Badrinath ki Dulhaniya. Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan return for their third flick together, only to become Bollywood’s adored on-screen couple. Romantic comedies mostly run on the same lines, but each of them has one unique spark. Badri and Vaidehi’s story has that very spark- the fight against the tradition of zeroing women to household chores, and the sin of burdening a girl’s family with the custom of dowry.
Vaidehi’s passion is to become a star-rated air hostess, and she did not want anything to come in her way, not even her love for Badri. She knew that his conventional family would turn her life upside down. Falling in the trap of baseless traditions, allowing her father to drown in loans trying to pay her dowry were things Vaidehi disapproved of. But does the very grounded, yet naughty Badri understand her point of view? We’re not telling; you’ve to watch and find out. What we can tell you is that it is certainly one of the best romantic comedies that Bollywood has offered.
8. Everybody Loves Somebody
When there are two men and a woman, some fake stories, and an out of city location it causes utter confusion leading to lots of humor. Everybody Loves Somebody is on those lines. Karta Souza plays a physician and gynecologist. Couples love visiting her for the fab tips she gives to them to lead a pleasurable physical life. Sadly so, her life lacks the same contentment. Her romantic life is seizing to add excitement, and our lady lead isn’t happy.
During one of her trips to Mexico, she pairs up with a colleague to show up at a wedding. But then, her boyfriend shows up too. The riot that comes thereafter is predictably unpredictable. Of course, the steamy scenes increase the excitement of watching the flick. Catch the movie to live it up with one of the best romantic comedies, Everbody Loves Somebody.
